India's squad for the ICC ODI World Cup squad has finally been revealed as a 15 member contingent that will take part in the upcoming tournament. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue will be fighting for their third World Cup title and this time, there will be a home advantage for them. The cricketing extravaganza will kick off on 5th October as reigning champions England will face New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
3 things you need to know
- Team India will open their World Cup campaign against Australia on 8th October
- The Men In Blue have had an awful record at ICC events
- Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian side
End of the road for these four Indian cricketers?
The 15-member squad does have a number of notable omissions with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin. Dhawan was expected to pave way the way for the youngsters but he has been India's flagbearer in the ICC events for the past few years.
The Punjab Kings skipper amassed 537 runs in two World Cups and his average also has been pretty good. When it comes to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he has not been in India's scheme of things in the limited over format. The likes of Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami are ahead of him in the pecking order and the right arm seamer might have played his last match in the Indian colours.
'Bhuvi' as he is fondly known is one of the most decorated swing bowlers India has ever produced but he hasn't donnes the Indian jersey since the 2022 T20 World Cup.
2011 World Cup winner, R Ashwin, also missed out as the selectors haven't included a right arm spinner in the squad. It remains to be seen how the three left arm frontline spinners Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav fare as Ashwin still remains a viable option for the Men in Blue.
Yuzvendra Chahal's absence raised severe questions as the leg spinner has been in good form in a limited format. He also had a brilliant IPL for Rajasthan Royals but he has now failed to make the cut which could be a subtle indication that the door is shut for the 33-year-old.
