New Zealand quick Mitchell McClenaghan will probably be released by defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. Mumbai Indians have recently roped in Kiwi pacer Trent Boult from Delhi Capitals for the upcoming edition. As a result, the probability of having two left-arm quicks from the same country as well as similar attributes seems unlikely.

An official announcement from the MI on McCleneghan is awaited. However, the fast bowler on Wednesday liked a tweet in which a Twitter user wrote that Indian skipper Virat Kohli was his 'bunny' in the IPL. The Twitter user wrote '"Virat is bunny of @Mitch_Savage in the IPL. @mipaltan plz don't release him, otherwise Virat wil score 5 hundreds on the flat track of Bangalore"

McClenaghan and Kohli have quite a history in the IPL as the latter has been dismissed by the former four times across the last five seasons. He also went on to like a tweet that compared his statistics with MI’s new signing Boult. Kohli, who captains Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, is the leading run-scorer of the tournament with 5,412 runs from 177 matches to his name. He has scored them at an impressive average of 37.84 and has smashed five centuries and 36 half-centuries in the process.
McClenaghan is fourth on the list of most wickets for Mumbai Indians with 71 scalps from 56 games since his debut in 2015. Ever since then, there has been no overseas bowler who has grabbed more wickets than him. The next in the list is West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo and South Africa’s Imran Tahir, who have taken 62 wickets each during the period MI have also brought West Indies' Sherfane Rutherford on board from Delhi Capitals (DC). Rutherford was roped in by DC for Rs 6.2 crore last season.
