Former Australia all-rounder Andrew McDonald has been roped in by Rajasthan Royals as their new head coach on a three-year contract. McDonald has previously played in the IPL for the Delhi Daredevils (2009 and 2011) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2012 and 2013). He was also the bowling coach of RCB. McDonald replaces Paddy Upton, who was only appointed before the start of the previous season. McDonald's first assignment as the head coach of RR will be at the IPL auction, which is scheduled for December 19 in Kolkata.
Ranjit Barthakur, the executive chairman of Rajasthan Royals, said in a press conference that they were delighted to appoint McDonald as their head coach. He shares their belief of discovering potential and championing dreams and is aligned with their vision to continue to drive innovation in the IPL. McDonald will be preparing for the season by sharing his experiences and best practices with exceptional coaches in other sports and will be visiting India in the near future to meet the Royals team, both on and off the field.

McDonald's appointment comes at a time when RR are struggling to get going in the competition despite having big names like Ben Stokes, Steve Smith & Ajinkya Rahane.
McDonald has four Tests for Australia in international cricket between January-March 2009. After gaining an experience of playing 100 List A matches, he went on become the head coach of his home state side, Victoria as he guided them to the Sheffield Shield title in his very first year. The Victorian moved on to BBL side Melbourne Renegades in a similar capacity last season and helped them win the BBL title as well, making his appointment potentially a good omen for the Royals.
