Katy Perry set to perform at the ICC T20 World Cup 2020 final on International Women's Day

The countdown for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup has begun with less than 100 days to go for the tournament to start. The tournament will start on February 21, with Australia facing India at Sydney. The ICC, in a media release, has just announced that international pop-sensation Katy Perry will be performing before the final, which will be played on International Women's Day on March 8, 2020.

A remarkable occasion for women

The final of the tournament will happen at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which also gives the ICC an opportunity to break the record for the highest attendance at any women's sporting event in history. The 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final holds the current record with an attendance of 90,185.

Perry commented on her performance on Twitter and conveyed her excitement regarding the same. She added that she is happy to be part of a day, which marks a great occasion for women in sports. Perry added that she will perform her most empowering songs for the women cricketers on the day of the final such as 'Roar'. The ICC and Katy Perry, both, are looking to propagate ideals of gender equality and women empowerment.

Not Katy Perry's first brush with cricket

Katy Perry rose to pop culture relevance with her debut album 'One of the Boys' and further rose to international acclaim with her album 'Teenage Dream.' Perry, who is one of the biggest pop stars of the 2010s, also performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Indian Premier League. Major pop stars like Akon and Pitbull have also been part of cricket celebrations in the past.
