Kolkata Knight Riders have always managed to assemble some of the best T20 stars in the world. Currently the team have some young talent at their disposal in form of  Shubman Gill, Varun Chakravarthy and Tom Banton. In the IPL 2020 auction, KKR bought nine players including Pat Cummins who became the most expensive player to complete their squad for the 2020 season. Ahead of the IPL 2020 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders released number of players which had Robin Uthappa, Australian opener Chris Lynn, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, Joe Denly, Yarra Prithviraj, Nikhil Naik, KC Cariappa, Matthew Kelly, Shrikant Mundhe, West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje.

During the IPL 2020 auction, Kolkata Knight Riders spent ₹27.15 crore. They paid money to buy Australia pacer Pat Cummins (₹15.50 crore), England batsman Eoin Morgan (₹5.25 crore), Varun Chakaravarthy (₹4 crore), England batsman Tom Banton (₹1 crore), Rahul Tripathi (₹60 lakh), Australia all-rounder Chris Green (₹20 lakh), wicketkeeper Nikhil Naik (₹20 lakh) and M Siddharth (₹20 lakh).
