Controversy has been a part and parcel of cricket. Bowlers sometimes take extreme measures to send the batsman back to the pavilion and sometimes even cross the designated line. Ish Sodhi's recent controversial run-out during the second ODI between Bangladesh and New Zealand triggered the whole cricket world.

3 things you need to know

  • Bangladesh lost the three-match series 2-0
  • They will now play their 1st warm-up fixture against Sri Lanka
  • New Zealand start their World Cup campaign against England on 5th October

Hasan Mahmud's dismissal of Ish Sodhi attracted much criticism

In the 46th over, Hasan Mahmud stopped his bowling runup and dislodged the non-striker's bails as he noticed Ish Sodhi was not within his mark. He didn't even caution the batsman even once and after appealing the onfield umpire referred it to the third umpire who adjudged him out.

Sodhi was on his way towards the dugout and in a very surprising call the Bangladesh team decided to recall the leg spinner. Ish was visibly delighted with the decision and even hugged the bowler after coming back. Former RCB batsman AB  de Villiers dissected the incident in great length and explained why there shouldn't be a two way show in such event.

AB de Villiers has his say on the Ish Sodhi incident

On his YouTube channel, the former South African skipper insisted either the dismissal should be dealt with normalcy or it should be removed from the cricketing books. “Something that is irritating me at the moment is the rule of the run out when the batter is leaving the crease. Ish Sodhi was called back by the captain and I think, this is a little all over the place. I looked at the footage. If I get bowled, the captain can't feel sorry for me and call me back. Right? So, why would this rule allow the batters to be called back?

“Where I am going with this is, I want the ICC to bring it into the rule that you can't call batters back. Make it a fair dismissal. There are too many grey areas. When you leave grey areas, it can be really sore on the eyes for the fans, and I find it really irritating and hurtful towards the game.”

He went on to add more, “My advice would be, take the rule away that you can't call a batter back. If a bowler wants to run the batter out, take the dismissal off the rule book. If you are caught on the boundary, you are out. These are the rules of the game. You can't say, ''ah, he is my friend, call him back'. I don't see this as sportsmanship, I'm sorry. It's a fair dismissal, it's out. Walk off the field.” The Kiwis wrapped up the three match ODI series 2-0 and will now head toward India to participate in the ICC Cricket World Cup.
