'Punish Them With Full Severity’: Mithali Raj Speaks Out on Horrific Kolkata Rape & Murder Case

The entire nation is shocked by the tragic rape and murder of the female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy is the prime accused and is also a repeat offender with a history of violence against women. recently, Roy's wife also revealed that she had tried to file an FIR against him as he had assaulted her multiple times, but her efforts went in vain.
The horrific incident has sparked nationwide protests with people demanding death penalty for prime accused Roy. Thousands of people across West Bengal and the entire country have demonstrated their anger in response to the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at the Kolkata hospital last week. Former India women's cricket team player Mithali Raj has now come out and has expressed frustration on the horrific incident.

As reported by ANI earlier, the Operation Theatre Services in All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) has been reduced by 85 per cent and the admission in the institute has been reduced by 65 per cent following the doctors' strike. The CBI also conducted a seven-hour-long investigation in the RG Kar Medical College.
'The brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata is a chilling reminder that even those who dedicate their lives to healing and saving others are not immune to the horrors of violence. It is beyond tragic that someone who vowed to protect and care for others fell victim to such a heinous act. Rapists must be punished with the full severity of the law. Every woman has the right to safety, freedom, and respect.', wrote Mitali on her X (formerly known as Twitter) account.

Crimes Against Women Should Be Probed Swiftly: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said state governments should act on crimes against women with "utmost urgency" and called for instilling deterrence among perpetuators, his comments coming in the backdrop of the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day, Modi expressed profound concern over incidents of rape and violence against women and said he can feel the outrage of people.

"Crimes against women should be probed swiftly, and stringent punishment given to those who commit such demonic acts," Modi said, stressing the need for societal introspection and creating fear of consequences among perpetrators.
"Today, from the Red Fort, I want to express my pain. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against our mothers, sisters, and daughters. There is anger among common people because of this. I can feel that rage," he said.
