When will Mohammed Shami return to competitive cricket?

Recent reports indicate that the Indian team management is approaching star bowler Mohammed Shami cautiously, giving his fitness and preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy priority over a hurried comeback to the squad. Shami is unlikely to be picked in India's next series against Bangladesh. The 33-year-old has been consistently working on his fitness; his ankle surgery in February has resulted in good recovery.

Mohammed Shami is expected to return on October 11 for the Ranji Trophy opener to gather domestic experience and get fit for national duty. After the Bangladesh series, he might play the second or third home Test against New Zealand.

Shami hasn't played since November's ODI World Cup final. He chose surgery after months of NCA therapy, and six months later, he is prepared for his comeback.

The star Indian pcer started bowling at the NCA in late July 2024, hence inspiring optimism for his Duleep Trophy involvement. He was not chosen for either of the teams though, as he had not yet recovered complete fitness. Sources suggest Shami would be taken under consideration for involvement in practice matches at the NCA if he is regularly bowling to batters in the nets.
