The issue of running out non-striker batters, often referred to as the "Mankad" dismissal, has been a subject of debate in the sport of cricket for a significant period. This term is derived from the name of former Indian all-rounder Vinoo Mankad, who famously executed this form of dismissal first in international cricket back in 1948. Recently, this matter has garnered renewed attention due to an incident involving Bangladeshi cricketer Hasan Mahmud, who used the method to remove Ish Sodhi at the non-striker's end during an ODI match against New Zealand on Saturday.
3 things you need to know
- New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first against Bangladesh
- Bangladesh failed to chase down 254 runs losing the match by 86 runs
- Ish Sodhi was named the player of the match for his all-round show
Tamim Iqbal criticises Litton Das' decision
During the 46th over of the match, Hasan Mahmud removed the bails before delivering the ball, as he had noticed that Ish Sodhi had ventured out of the crease in an attempt to gain an advantage. Mahmud promptly appealed to the umpire for a run-out. Umpire Marais Erasmus then referred the decision to the third umpire, who confirmed Sodhi's dismissal for straying too far from the crease.
As Sodhi began to walk back to the pavilion, he responded with a sarcastic round of applause directed at Mahmud. However, Bangladesh captain Litton Das intervened and ultimately decided to recall Sodhi to the crease. Interestingly, this decision did not go down well with Litton's own teammate, senior opening batsman, and former captain Tamim Iqbal, who said that didn't see anything wrong with the dismissal.
"I don't see anything wrong in it. The rule is there. If we get someone out, or one of us gets out in that manner, I don't think we should react the way people are reacting nowadays. I think it is a team decision. We will definitely talk about it after today's incident. If it is a team decision that we will take wickets in this way, we will. If we don't want to take it, we will not try it. I don't think it looks good to bring back a batter after getting him out. Either we take it, or we don't do it," Tamim said after the match.
"I think he [Sodhi] also shouldn't have done that [left the crease early], he shouldn't be surprised too. Whether we take it or not, it is the team's call. I was surprised by his reaction. It is now part of cricket. There's no need for a warning here. It is like a bowled out. Maybe the captain felt that we wouldn't take that wicket. So he called him [Sodhi] back. There's no right and wrong. Either you do it, or you don't do it. Nothing wrong with either. I think we should discuss as a team if we want to do it or not. Going forward, I think you will see a lot of teams taking advantage of this,” he added.
New Zealand look to prepare well ahead of the ODI World Cup
New Zealand ultimately managed to win the match by 86 runs thanks to Sodhi's remarkable show with the ball. Sodhi picked up six wickets for 39 runs with Bangladesh being bowled out for just 168 runs.
