Australian captain Pat Cummins has opened up about the team's previous two home series losses to India, revealing that the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series defeat "hurt more" than the 2020-21 series. India won the last two editions of the BGT that were held in Australia.

Pat Cummins on why 2018-19 BGT was worse than 2020-21

In a podcast interview on The Grade Cricketer, Pat Cummins reflected on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India, starting November 22. He acknowledged that both series losses were tough but felt that the 2018-19 series was a more comprehensive defeat.

Pat Cummins praised India's performance in the 2020-21 series, particularly their historic win at the Gabba, which he deemed a tightly contested series. In contrast, he felt that Australia was "completely outplayed" in the 2018-19 series, which made it a more painful defeat.

“I actually thought that the series before was worse. We got completely beaten. Whereas that series (2020-21) was quite tightly fought, I thought, and they played fantastically well to win at the Gabba. Whereas before, we were completely outplayed. That one hurt more for me,” Cummins said on 'The Grade Cricketer' podcast on YouTube.

With the upcoming series looming, Australia will be without all-rounder Cameron Green, who is undergoing back surgery and will be out of action for six months. The series will commence in Perth on November 22, followed by Tests in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, concluding on January 7, 2025.

Australia have not won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series for the past four editions. Australia will be hoping to turn things around this time when they meet India for the contest. Also, this is the first time since 1991-92 that Australia and India will compete in a five-match Test series.
