Washington Sundar has been added to the India squad for the remaining two Tests versus New Zealand. Days after he was added, Ryan ten Doeschate, India's fielding coach has revealed the reason behind the move. As per ten Doeschate, Sundar was added to the squad to counter the four left-handers present in the New Zealand side. Sundar was added in the squad straight after the Bengaluru Test as he had hit a hundred against Delhi in a Ranji game. And he had also picked up six wickets in that game.

Speaking ahead of the second Test in Pune, Ten Doeschate said: "Look, we've obviously got Axar in the squad as well. They're filled with four left-handers in their 11. We want the option to take the ball away from the left-handers as well. You know, we've had Washi around the white ball squad for a while and we like the way he operates. It's also nice to see that guys are getting rewarded for a Ranji Trophy performances as well."

Pant, who injured his knee during New Zealand’s first innings, left the field and did not return to wicketkeeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel replaced him behind the stumps, but India hopes Pant will be fit enough to resume his role in Pune.
