The assault which took Devine’s score from 55 off 51 balls to 85* from 56 balls proved to be the difference in the end as the Strikers registered a 17-run victory. Eighteen-year-old teenager Madeline Penna was at the receiving end as her figures of 3-17 from the first three overs that she had bowled were dismantled.
Having been invited to bat, Strikers managed to score 133 for 4 after the penultimate over. However, the innings changed completely when Devine took on Penna in the final over. Sophie Devine pulled the second ball of the over which was a full toss, over deep mid-wicket for a six. The third ball went for a six over the long-off.
She was in no mood of slow down her innings as she pulled the fourth ball over the deep mid-wicket for another six. The next six came when Devine hit to long-on. Sophie Devine concluded their innings with another maximum over deep mid-wicket in their 7-run victory over the Melbourne Stars in Adelaide on Sunday.
The Strikers posted a score of 164/4. In response, Stars lost their captain Elyse Villani early for only 1 run. Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee revived the innings and were scoring at a brisk rate that had them on track for a win.
Lee departed for 52 off 41 balls which was a huge blow for the Stars as it led to their downfall. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They were 115/1 at one point of time but could only manage 147/8 by the end of their innings. Devine contributed with the ball as well as she bagged two wickets giving away only 19 runs and thereby putting in a terrific all-round performance.
