Steve Smith has proved why he is the best Test batsman and arguably the greatest of this generation after some outstanding performances against arch-rivals England in the ongoing Ashes series. Smith has had a dream run in this series so far, the former Australian skipper has now amassed 751 runs in just six innings, which is more than double the tally of the next highest runscorer on either side. The ex-skipper was ruled out of the third Test due to a concussion but made a terrific comeback in the fourth Test at the Old Trafford as he scored 211 and 82. Recently, the charismatic Australian batsman had dethroned Virat Kohli to become the number one batsman in ICC Test rankings. Even in the fifth Test match at the Oval, he made his bat do the talking but was also involved in a hilarious incident.

When Jonny Bairstow deceives Steve Smith

England's bowlers have not succeeded in getting Steve Smith early on in the entire series and therefore, English wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow decided to try his luck in getting rid of the stylish Australian batsman but, it was not an ideal dismissal by any means. It happened on the fourth ball of the 30th over which was bowled by Jofra Archer, on that delivery, Matthew Wade after driving the ball down the ground decided to take three runs quickly. Nonetheless, when Steve Smith was returning back to the striker's end, Jonny Bairstow pretended to collect the ball. Seeing this, Smith put in a full-length dive and got back to the crease safely. Unfortunately, it was a needless dive from Steve Smith as the throw was never made at the keeper's end and in fact, was made at the bowler's end. It was only after the world's top-ranked Test batsman got back on his feet that he realised that he had been deceived by Jonny Bairstow. The video of Jonny Bairstow deceiving Steve Smith was posted on social media as well.

Another six-wicket haul for Jofra Archer

Steve Smith went on to score a 145-ball 80 before he was trapped in front of the wicket by Chris Woakes. Surprisingly, this also is Steve Smith's lowest score in Ashes 2019. His scores throughout the series include 144, 142, 92, 211and 82 respectively. Meanwhile, Jofra Archer took another six-wicket haul which blew away Australia as they were bundled out for 225 and thereby, giving the hosts a 69-run lead. Archer finished with figures of 6/62 at an economy rate of 2.60 which included nine maidens.
