Steve Smith’s heroics propel Washington Freedom to lift the MLC 2024 beating San Francisco in the final

Against the San Francisco Unicorns at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas, Washington Freedom skipper Steve Smith gave a superb performance in the 2024 Major League Cricket (MLC) final. After being called in to bat first, Smith guided his team to a stunning total of 207-5 with an amazing 88 runs off just 52 balls.

Given that Smith was left out of the 2024 T20 World Cup team, the MLC in 2024 was a big platform for him to restate his T20 cricket ability. Under head coach Ricky Ponting, Smith advanced himself alongside Travis Head to the top of the order. Head's early departure by Pat Cummins caused Smith to steady the innings with careful opening play, only getting 10 runs off his first 12 deliveries. Then he changed course, targeting Hassan Khan in the last powerplay over.

Before teaming with Glenn Maxwell to create a devastating combo, Smith developed important relationships with Andries Gous and Rachin Ravindra. The Australian stars destroyed the bowling assault of the opponent taken collectively. Smith maintained a strong strike rate as he reached his fifty in 34 balls and kept accelerating, striking successive sixes from Carmi le Roux. Cummins finally sent him off in the 17th over.

With seven fours and six sixes in his knock, Smith finished his MLC season tied for second place in run scoring with opening partner Travis Head.

The bowlers of Washington Freedom then had a remarkable performance that limited the San Francisco Unicorns to only 111 runs in 16 overs. Comprising three wickets each, Marco Jansen and Rachin Ravindra were the best bowlers. Washington Freedom the MLC championship was won comprehensively by 96 runs, therefore ending a strong tournament performance.
