The Hitman Rohit Sharma had a dream run in the quadrennial event. He scored 648 runs from nine matches which include five centuries which is the most in a single edition of the showpiece event. He almost closed in on Sachin Tendulkar's all-time World Cup record of 673 runs. India's young pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah also had an excellent outing. Bumrah was India's best bowler in the tournament with 18 scalps in nine games.
England's Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jason Roy and Jofra Archer played vital roles in England's maiden World Cup triumph. Root scored the first century of the tournament. The number three batsman also finished as the fifth highest run scorer in the tournament. Jason Roy gave explosive starts for the hosts on top. He had a forgettable final but had scored a blistering 65-ball 85 in the semis against arch-rivals Australia. Ben Stokes played a good knock of 84 in the final and was adjudged Man of the Match. Meanwhile, new recruit Jofra Archer also impressed one and all with his terrific bowling performance.
Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan showcased an outstanding all round performance. The veteran scored 606 runs and also had 11 scalps to his name.
Australis' Mitchell Starc finished as the leading wicket-taker with 27 scalps. At the same time, young wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey also made a tremendous impact in the showpiece event. He scored 85 against South Africa and almost got the Aussies over the line. Carey then got hit on the chin by a short ball from Jofra Archer but still soldiered on for his side in their semi-final loss against England.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson was adjudged Player of the Tournament for scoring 578 runs including two centuries and two half-centuries. His team-mate Lockie Ferguson also had a good tournament with the ball. However, his standout feature was taking a spectacular catch to dismiss England captain Eoin Morgan in the summit clash.
To end the proceedings, Kiwi speedster Trent Boult has been named as the 12th man.
