In their Round 2 match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20, Mumbai emerged victorious over Jharkhand by 39 runs to take their tally to 20 points in the tournament. This high-scoring contest was filled with a lot of stunning performances.
Having won the toss, Mumbai decided to bat first. Young sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicket-keeper Aditya Tare opened the Mumbai innings. The duo started aggressively and started piling on runs at a brisk pace. Jaiswal led the assault and was the aggressor among the two as Tare was content playing the second fiddle. Jharkhand bowlers had to toil hard for wickets as Mumbai continued their onslaught.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: The youngest Indian double-centurion in List A cricket
The 17-year old Jaiswal scored his second consecutive century in the tournament. The duo stitched a 200-run partnership before Tare was caught behind off Anukul Roy on 78. But the young batsman did not slow down and kept playing his shots to complete his double century courtesy 17 fours and 12 sixes.
Jaiswal became the youngest batsman in the world to score a double hundred in a 50-overs game, breaking the record of South Africa's Alan Barrow who achieved the same back in 1975 at the age of 20 years and 275 days. The Mumbai batsman got out in the 50th over for 203 off just 154 balls but he had ensured a big score for the team. Lad and Iyer chipped in with useful cameos thereafter, setting Jharkhand a massive target of 359 to win.
Jharkhand's chase did not start as planned as opener Utkarsh Singh went for a duck. Captain Ishan Kishan and Kumar Deobrat had started steadying the innings but fell in quick succession. Saurabh Tiwary and Virat Singh were the new batsmen at the crease. They started playing cautiously and took the team past 100. Both completed their half-centuries soon after and kept the score ticking as Jharkhand crossed 200.
Tiwary fell for 77 after a fine 171-run partnership. Singh combined with Roy by building a partnership and completed his century. He fell immediately after his century and Jharkhand could not really recover and were bowled out for 319. Dhawal Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets to his name.
Thus, Mumbai secured an emphatic victory by 39 runs. It was a must-win game for them to stay in the competition. Mumbai is now placed at sixth position in the points table.
