On what was perhaps the biggest single day in sports in recent memory, England was witness to a remarkable bit of banter on Sunday as the biggest events in two different sports reached dramatic climaxes.
In London, the Cricket World Cup was witnessing a dramatic climax as England tried to chase down New Zealand's 241-run total, whereas not far away, at the All England Tennis and Croquet club, Roger Federer faced-off against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.
At a certain point, after swinging in both directions, both matches ended up going into a tie-breaker. Federer failed to convert two championship points as Djokovic battled hard to take the fifth set to a tie-break, whereas England rode their luck as Ben Stokes scored at least 10 bonus runs from two plays that could just as easily have resulted in his dismissal and the end of his team's chances.
At this time, with nerves jangling, Wimbledon wrote to ICC and asked how it was coping with nerves at its end:
In reply, the ICC found itself a bit overwhelmed, telling the Wimbledon handle in response that things were a big hectic at its end:
A short while later, once things had calmed down and England and Novak Djokovic had won, the ICC said:
The remarkable day in sports witnessed England winning their first World Cup and Novak Djokovic winning his fifth Wimbledon. Additionally, Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix not very far away.
