In a Group stage match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, New Zealand emerged victorious against Papua New Guinea, securing a 7-wicket win with a remarkable 46 balls left. Papua New Guinea batted first but struggled to build momentum, managing only 78 runs in 19.4 overs, with Charles Amini and Norman Vanua among the few to reach double figures. Lockie Ferguson's outstanding bowling performance of 3/0 in 4 overs earned him the Player of the Match title. In response, New Zealand confidently chased down the target in 12.2 overs, with Devon Conway top-scoring with 35 runs. Despite this win, New Zealand's failure to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the tournament underscores the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket and the Black Caps' major failure in the competition.

Trent Boult indicates New Zealand retirement after exiting the T20 World Cup

Trent Boult, a left-arm pacer, said that after New Zealand's poor T20 World Cup campaign ended on Monday in Trinidad with a seven-wicket victory against Papua New Guinea, he had probably played his "last day" of international cricket.

It appeared as though Boult's 13-year international career came to an end during a quiet T20 World Cup encounter. After the match Trent Boult said:

“It feels a little bit weird, a few emotions obviously the last couple of days,”

“I haven’t thought much further than this, I’m in no position to comment right now. I enjoyed being out there one last time.”

Regarding the subject of whether this was Boult's last game for New Zealand, he added some ambiguity. The Black Caps' chances of making it to the second round of the Super Eights were shattered by losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies, the tournament's co-hosts, in Group C.

Prior to the match, which took place at the Brian Lara Stadium in front of a small audience, Papua New Guinea had already been eliminated.

Boult got two wickets for 14 runs throughout the match, and Lockie Ferguson, another fast bowler, had an incredible performance, finishing with three wickets in his four overs as PNG was bowled out for 78.
