Sunil Gavaskar lauds Arshdeep Singh for his heroics against the USA in the T20 World Cup and endorses him for the Test team
Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has pushed for left-arm bowler Arshdeep Singh's quick inclusion into the country's Test squad. Gavaskar made his remarks on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, after Arshdeep had an outstanding four overs of 4/9 against the USA.
With his signature in-swinger, the 25-year-old struck the first ball of the game to take a wicket. With his effort, Arshdeep established a new mark for the greatest stats ever recorded by an Indian bowler in T20 World Cup competition. Gavaskar commended Arshdeep and asked the selectors to give him some thought for the red-ball format in an interview with Star Sports following the India-USA game. Sunil Gavaskar said:
“I do believe that he, like, Bumrah can be a very, very good bowler in red-ball cricket as well. Because if he can move the white ball so well, just imagine what he can do with the red ball. So I think the selection committee would do very well to look at him as an option for the red-ball game as well,”
Having taken 49 wickets in 16 games at an average of 31.97, Arshdeep Singh has an impressive first-class record.
With seven wickets in three games at an average of 10.71 and an economy rate of 6.25, he has become India's main bowler in the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup. His steady work shows that he can succeed in the game's longer format. Sunil Gavaskar added:
“He looked to bowl at hard lengths, looking to get the ball into the right-hander, and a little away for the left-handers. That's been his strength, to be able to get both those deliveries on the spot and he wasn't looking to bowl too many yorkers today, he was looking to bowl the hard lengths. And his temperament is fantastic,”
With 69 wickets in 47 games at an average of less than 20, Arshdeep Singh has an outstanding T20I record. His outstanding display against the USA helped India win their third straight game and guarantee their spot in the Super 8 round of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
