India are all set to play another ICC knockout game when they lock horns with England in the T20 World Cup 2024 semi final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Not only that the team always looks to dominate in the league phase but ends up disappointing in the knockouts. As we head into the semis, here is unpacking India's dismal record in ICC knockouts for past since 2013.

India's dismal record in ICC knockouts since 2013

India last won an ICC trophy under the captaincy of MS Dhoni and that was the Champions Trophy in 2013. Since then, India has played a total of 8 ICC tournaments excluding the World Test Championships. These 8 ICC tournaments include 3 ODI World Cups, 1 Champions Trophy and 4 T20 World Cups.

In all these tournaments India has dominated the group stages and faced disappointment in the knockout stages of the tournament. Here's the abysmal record of Team India.

In 8 tournaments, India has played a total of 11 knockout games and have only won four of these games and lost seven. If we dig deeper then out of the four wins, India's two wins have come against Bangladesh, one against South Africa and one against New Zealand.  This goes on to suggest how dire and toothless the team has been over the last 11 years in knockouts.

Perhaps the biggest and most stinging defeat came in the 2023 ODI World Cup final when they lost at home to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in a tournament where they were unbeaten since the finals.

NZ: 239/8, IND: 221 (NZ won by 18 runs)

IND: 168/6, ENG: 170/0 (England won by 10 wickets, 24 balls left)

IND: 397/4, NZ: 327 (India won by 70 runs)

India's record paints a very bleak picture for Rohit Sharma and his side. As they gear up for the rematch of T20 World Cup 2022 semi final, Rohit Sharma and co will be hoping to right the wrongs of the past 11 years.
