India vs USA: For the first time in history of cricket, a team was docked 5 runs for major offence

Team India suffered a major batting collapse when they went against the co-hosts, USA, at the Nassau County stadium. In the bowler-friendly track, the Aaron Jones-led side managed to take out openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. But it was Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, who stood up to the role and took India towards a win. But at one point, a moment took place that happened in International Cricket for the first time. The instance gave an edge to the Rohit Sharma-led side, with SKY and Dube making sure that they made appropriate use of it. But what really happened out there?

India vs US, T20 World Cup: Aaron Jones-led side suffer a major offence for the first time in International Cricket

During the 15th over of India vs USA ICC Men's T20 World Cup match, the umpire signaled that the Men in Blue were awarded five extra runs without the loss of any ball. The USA Cricket Team, who had the momentum railing towards them, saw a sudden shift as they were penalized due to a delay caused by the co-hosts. The Aaron Jones-led side took more than a minute to start an over, and it happened thrice. As a result, the umpire gave them a heavy price and it allowed Team India to steal the momentum.

At that stage, Team India needed 35 runs off 30 balls, but the addition of five runs without the loss of a ball gave the visiting side an edge. It is the first time when any team was docked five runs for delaying the start of an over, and the US did it thrice in the same match-up.

India achieved the most successful chase at New York, scoring 111/3 to offset the USA's 110/8, thanks in large part to the contributions of Shivam Dube (31), Arshdeep Singh (4/9) and Suryakumar Yadav (50*). This has allowed the Rohit Sharma-led side to secure a Super 8 spot and will face some of the top teams in the competition.

Team India will face Canada in their final group-stage match, which will take place at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida on June 15, 2024.
