After Pakistan’s humiliating exit from the T20 World Cup 2024, the country’s parliament on Saturday discussed the issue on the floor of the house as if it is their biggest national concern at the moment. During a session, Abdul Qadir Patel, a member of the Pakistan National Assembly, expressed his disappointment over the national cricket team’s debacle in the showpiece event held in the United States and West Indies.

Hilarious discussion in Pakistan's parliament

Addressing the assembly, Abdul Qadir Patel didn't hold back his frustrations, taking a pointed dig at skipper Babar Azam. His comments, laced with sarcasm, drew parallels between the cricket team's performance and the political scenario involving former captain and prime minister, Imran Khan.

"Ye cricket team ko kya hua hai. Yeh America se bhi haar gaye. Yeh India se bhi haar gaye toh Babar Azam ko apne hi kisi senior cricketer se sabak lete hue haarne ke baad ek jalsa rakhe, woh usme kagaz lehraye bole dekho yeh mere khilaf saazish ho rahi hai, koi usse kuch nahi puchega. Uske baad jo hai woh baat hi khatam ho jayegi," Abdul Qadir Patel remarked.

(Translation: "What’s wrong with our cricket team? They lost to America, they lost to India. Babar Azam should take a lesson from one of his senior cricketers [Hinting at Imran Khan] and throw a party after losing where he should wave some documents in public stating, ‘There’s been a conspiracy against me.’ No one will question him after that, and the matter will be over.")

The remarks by Abdul Qadir Patel reflect the widespread disappointment and frustration among Pakistani cricket fans and politicians alike. Losing to both the United States and arch-rivals India in the same tournament has intensified the scrutiny of the team's performance and leadership. There have been rumours that everything was not well in Pakistan's dressing room during their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

Several media reports from Pakistan suggest that there are groupings within the team and many players are not talking to each other. Pakistan's white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten's alleged dressing room talk was also leaked to the press. Kirsten's comment that ‘there is no unity in the Pakistan team’ made headlines after the team's exit.
