Despite losing to Australia in the World Cup 2023 final, some Indian players had outstanding performances in the competition. The ICC's World Cup 2023 XI featured six Indians, demonstrating their dominance. With a record-breaking 763 runs, Virat Kohli stood out as the Indian batter, but Mohammed Shami also made a substantial contribution to the team's success.

A tactical shift led to increase in Mohammed Shami's role in India's bowling resurgence

Shami took home an incredible 24 wickets to emerge as the tournament's best wicket-taker despite not playing in the first four games. In addition to being the most successful Indian bowler in World Cup history, this achievement demonstrated his capacity to have a significant influence on the team when it matters most. After India had to change their plans due to Hardik Pandya's injury, Shami's participation became even more important.

Because of destiny, Mohammed Shami was substituted for Shardul Thakur in order to strengthen the bowling unit, while Suryakumar Yadav took Pandya's position. Shami made an instant impression on the tournament, taking five wickets in his opening game against New Zealand and maintaining that level of performance throughout.

Beyond the cricket pitch, Shami's ability was noteworthy. Hasan Raza, a former cricketer for Pakistan, conjectured that the Indian Cricket Council (ICC) would be giving Indian pacers new balls as they were dominating strong teams like Sri Lanka, South Africa, and England. During the 2023 World Cup, Mohammed Shami's outstanding performances not only put an end to such notions but also cemented his place as a pivotal figure in India's bowling comeback.

Mohammed Shami makes a scathing remark about conspiracy theories build by Pakistan players

In an Instagram story, Mohammed Shami, the lone Indian cricketer to address the conspiracy notion, angrily criticised the unfounded claims. Reflecting on the event following the World Cup's completion, Shami stated in a PUMA podcast,

"I know I can be bitter while speaking the truth, but if I don't open my mouth after all this, then it won't be right."

"I'm not jealous of anybody. If you start enjoying the success of others then you can become a better player. I was not playing at the beginning (of the World Cup). Jab khel raha that World Cup, toh 5 wickets liye, 4 wickets aur fir se 5 wickets liye. Kuch Pakistan ke players ko ye baat hajam nahi ho rahi toh main kya karu. Kyuki unke dimaag mein ye hai ki ham best hai. Bhai best woh hota hai jo time per perform kare....aap usme controversy banaya chale ja rahe ho, ki tumhe ball kuch aur colour ki mil rahi hai..kisi aur company ki mil rahi hai....Sudhar jao yaar. ( The first few times I played, I got five wickets, then four, and finally five. Some Pakistani players had a hard time with it. They believe they are the best. The best person is the one who does their job at the right time. You are stirring up trouble for no reason. You are telling us that the balls we are getting are different and come from different companies. You should learn from this.)”

“Wasim Akram had explained how the ball is chosen. How the fourth umpire brings a box to the fielding team but despite that you say all this? It is understandable if you have not played the game at all. But when an ex-player says all these things, I don't think people would do anything else apart from laughing,”

Shami said that famous cricketer Wasim Akram had explained how the balls are chosen in international cricket. Even after this was made clear, some past cricket players kept making false claims.
