Afghanistan were on a fairytale run in T20 World Cup 2024 as they defeated New Zealand in the group stages and Australia in the Super 8 to qualify for their first ever Semi Finals in an ICC tournament.
However, there was going to be no more dream run as in their first ever semi final, Rashid Khan and his team faced a hammering loss at the hands of South Africa. Afghanistan batted first and in a shockingly poor batting performance, they were all out by Proteas on a score of just 56 runs.
It was the lowest total ever set by a team in a T20 World Cup semi final and as it turned out South Africa had no problems in chasing the score as they ended up winning by 9 wickets and in just 8.5 overs.
It had been a tournament of highs for Afghanistan but it ended all so poorly towards the end. As Rashid Khan and his side crashed out of the semi finals, Afghanistan set some unwanted records in the process.

South Africa progress to first ever Final
While it was heartbreak for Afghanistan, South Africa progressed to their first ever Final in an ICC tournament. After years of heartbreak in the semi finals, the Proteas will play in their first ever final where they will face the winner of semi final 2 between India and England.
