T20 World Cup 2024: Australia can qualify for semi finals even if they lose to India
Australia and India will face each other in their final Super 8 clash at T20 World Cup 2024. Even if AUS lose they can qualify for the semi finals. Here's how
Australia are in a spot of bother in T20 World Cup 2024 after they shockingly lost to Afghanistan by 21 runs in their Super 8 clash. With this loss, Australia’s hopes for qualifying into the Super 8 are hanging on a thread.
Australia need to defeat India in their final Super 8 clash on Monday to qualify for the semi finals of T20 World Cup 2024. However, in a bizarre scenario winning might not be necessary for the Kangaroos because even if they lose to India there is still a possibility they advance into the semi finals with only one win and two points. Here’s how.
How can Australia qualify for T20 World Cup 2024 Semi Finals despite losing to India?
Ideally the 2023 ODI World Cup champions would want to beat India and guarantee themselves qualification into the semi finals. But if disaster were to strike and they were to lose to the team they beat in Finals to win the ODI world cup then also they might make it to last four.
If Australia do lose they will need a helping hand from Bangladesh. Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in their final Super 8 game. So if Bangladesh manages to beat Afghanistan, then all three of Afghanistan, Australia and Bangladesh would be on 2 points each.
And given that Australia has a much superior run rate than both Afghanistan and Bangladesh, the men from down under would sneak their way into the final four.
Mitchell Marsh and his side won’t want their fates to be decided in such a manner and would want to beat Rohit Sharma and his men to give themselves breathing room. But losing won’t be the end of the world and on the off chance Australia do qualify into semis with just two points, they have the chance to become the first team to win the entire tournament despite winning just one Super 8 game.
And if there's one thing we know about the Aussies they sure do love to create history when their backs are against the wall.
