'Thank you Ro for the call': Rahul Dravid thanks Rohit Sharma to convince him to stay until T20 WC

India displayed a resilient performance to clinch victory over South Africa in the thrilling final of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Setting a target of 177, India's skipper Rohit Sharma’s early departure seemed to boost South Africa's morale. However, a determined Virat Kohli rose to the occasion with a stellar 76 off 59 balls. In response, South Africa fell short by 7 runs despite a valiant innings by Heinrich Klaasen. Player of the Match, Kohli's exceptional batting combined with Bumrah's impactful bowling sealed India's triumph, ending a long wait for the prestigious title.

Rahul Dravid reveals Rohit Sharma convinced him to stay till T20 World Cup

Following the excitement of India's T20 World Cup victory, Rahul Dravid displayed uncharacteristic emotion as he received the trophy from Virat Kohli. This marked a notable moment in his coaching career. Initially considering resignation after India's ODI World Cup loss to Australia, Dravid's decision to stay was influenced by Rohit Sharma's persuasive efforts. In  a farewell video posted by BCCI, Rahul Dravid thanked Rohit Sharma for the phone call, he made after India lost ODI World Cup final top convince him to stay. To which Dravid decided to continue with the Indian cricket team for 6 more months until the T20 World Cup, which they eventually won by finishing unbeatable throughout the tournament. In the video posted by BCCI, Rahul Dravid said: 

'Just like to say Ro, thank you very much for making that call I mean in November and asking me to continue (till T20 World Cup) I think it’s been a pleasure to work with each and every one of you but also to Ro (Rohit Sharma) thanks for the time I know as a captain and a coach there is a lot of times we have to chat and discuss we have to agree we have to disagree at times but thank you so very much I think you know it’s been brilliant to know each and every one of you in person and yeah I think it’s your moment.

It’s not about any individual we won this as a unit we won this as a team'

The Indian cricket squad is preparing for a T20 series against Zimbabwe and a white-ball series against Sri Lanka. There are rumours that the appointment of the new Head Coach to replace the departing Rahul Dravid will be announced prior to the start of the Sri Lanka series.
