The Collins dictionary added the term "Bazball" on Wednesday, recognising the audacious and violent style of play adopted by the England men's cricket team. Under the direction of red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, this strategy was very clear throughout this year's Ashes series. In May 2022, McCullum, also known as "Baz," who was New Zealand's opening batter and previous captain, took up the position of Test coach for England.

'Bazball' has earned its official recognition as a noun in the dictionary, defined as "a test cricket style where the batting side aims to seize the initiative by playing in an exceptionally aggressive manner." Interestingly, despite its formal inclusion in the dictionary, Brendon McCullum, the individual associated with this style of play, doesn't seem to have a strong affinity for the term.

Bazball's entry to the English lexicon is smashed by Marnus Labuschagne

Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne voiced his displeasure with the addition of "Bazball" to the lexicon, suggesting that the choice was not well-received by the cricketing community as a whole. The right-handed batter expressed doubt about the fresh scenario as he prepared to face their sworn enemies in Saturday's 2023 World Cup encounter in Ahmedabad. When asked about the entry, he said:

“Oh man, that is garbage. I don't know what that is, honestly,”

Has the word ‘Bazball’ been included in the physical dictionary?

'Bazball' garnered significant acclaim, being selected as one of Collins' ten words of the year and even reaching the Word of the Year shortlist; however, it ultimately was defeated by the ubiquitous 'AI'. Furthermore, 'Bazball' was recognised by Harper Collins as one of the ten most consequential new words of the year.

While the term 'Bazball' has been officially integrated into the online edition of the dictionary, its formal inclusion in the subsequent edition of the physical dictionary is anticipated. This highlights the profound influence and importance of the cricketing term within the dictionary of modern discourse.

Talking about the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023, Australia are set to knock horns against England on November 4, 2023 at the Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. Australia are currently third on the table and are likely to qualify for the semifinals. On the other hand, England are 10th on the table and are having one of the worst tournaments as the defending champions.
