'This is more special...': Rohit Sharma Says 2024 World Cup Win as More Special Than 2007 Victory
Rohit Sharma deems the 2024 World Cup triumph to be more special than the 2007 victory, emphasizing the significance of the recent win.
Team India's jam-packed celebration plan concluded with a lap of honour around the Wankhede Stadium boundaries. All of the players were happy and thoroughly immersed in the grandeur of the event held for them to bring home the T20 World Cup 2024. This came after Rohit Sharma led the Indian cricket team to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, beating South Africa in the finals on June 29, 2024. The captain ended India’s 11 years of ICC trophy drought. Fans were crazy when the Indian team did a bus parade at the Marine Drive.
Rohit Sharma says the 2024 World Cup is more special than the 2007 win
The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, emphasised the specific pride of leading the team and said that his team's 2024 T20 World Cup triumph was more significant than his own 2007 success. On Thursday, July 4, the Team India headed back home following their World Cup victory against South Africa in the championship game.
In Delhi as well as Mumbai, fans greeted the World Champions with great enthusiasm, making special preparations for their visit. The players were treated to a breakfast meeting by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Mumbai's BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) arranged an exclusive open-roof bus roadshow so that fans could get up close and personal with their favourites.
In a video that the BCCI published, which captured the emotions of the roadshow, Rohit talked back on his 2007 T20 World Cup victory. Having guided the squad to gold, he did, however, say that the 2024 win would always have a special place in his heart. The Indian captain also conveyed his satisfaction at seeing their victory spread happiness throughout the country. Rohit Sharma said:
“2007 was a different feeling, we started off in the afternoon and this is in the evening. I cannot forget 2007 as it was my first World Cup. This is little more special because I was leading the team so it’s a very proud moment for me. This is going to be mad. You can make out the excitement and it shows how much it means not just to us but also to the entire nation. It means a lot. So, I am very happy that we could achieve something like this for them as well,”
It is also important to note that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli declared their retirement from Twenty20 international cricket after leading India to glory in the ICC T20 World Cup. With Rohit scoring 4,231 runs and Virat Kohli recording 4,188 runs, they conclude the format as its top two scorers. Both both these legends retiring, India will now send its young generation in the T20Is as the Indian cricket team will now be seen in action against Zimbabwe. Team India will be led by Shubman Gill in this series.
