The T20 World Cup 2024 didn't turn out to be an ideal tournament for Virat Kohli so far. The star Indian batter has struggled to accumulate his usual T20 figures while batting at the top along with Rohit Sharma. Kohli will enter the Kensington Oval on Saturday with an abysmal cumulation of 75 runs after 7 matches. Despite being nowhere close to his standards, the aura of Virat Kohli is such that he is expected to come up with a big innings during the India vs South Africa T20 World Cup 2024 final.
Virat Kohli backed to repeat MS Dhoni's World Cup 2011 heroics
Virat Kohli's T20 World Cup 2024 run has an uncanny resemblance with MS Dhoni's World Cup 2011 campaign. Dhoni struggled for form throughout the tournament but in the end, it is his unbeaten 91-run knock in the final that is being celebrated and is etched in the hearts of the fans.
Virat Kohli has displayed a similar trajectory till now and as India have made it to the final of the T20 World Cup 2024, former India player Mohammed Kaif has urged Kohli to recall the incredible MS Dhoni innings from the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka and light up the dais in a similar way against South Africa.
"Virat Kohli needs to remember that even Dhoni didn't have a great World Cup in 2011 but he found form in the final. Small suggestion: He is too good a player to slog, he can play ball on merit and dominate any bowling attack," Kaif said.
Kaif also suggested Kohli to stop being uncharacteristic while opening and approach the game in the same way that he has applied in his entire career.
“Mahendra Singh Dhoni was out of form in 2011 ODI World Cup. He played an unbeaten 91-run knock in the final. His six over long on off Kulasekara is etched in everybody's mind. That's why I think Virat Kohli has a great chance to become a hero. He must forget that he is in poor form. He had hit a century when India last played South Africa in the ODI World Cup at Eden Gardens. He was brilliant that day and played very well but he wasn't slogging that day but was playing the ball on merit with proper cricket shots.” He added.
