Mumbai batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal on Wednesday became the youngest Indian cricketer to score a double century in List A cricket, at the age of 17. Jaiswal scored 203 runs from 154 balls against Jharkhand in their Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 clash in Bangalore. The scintillating knock took Mumbai to a massive score of 358-3 in 50 overs. On a good wicket, the team can fancy itself to defend the score.

Jaiswal's record-breaking innings had 12 sixes, which is the most by a batsman in an innings in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019. Jaiswal also became the seventh Indian batsman to score a double century in List A cricket and the fourth to achieve it in the domestic circuit. With this double century, Jaiswal now has an average of above 100 in List A cricket. This is Jaiswal’s third century in five matches. After winning the toss, Mumbai decided to bat first and the openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Aditya Tare put up a 200-run partnership for the first wicket. Tare scored a 102-ball 78, giving Jaiswal all the license to attack.

Great start

Just a few days ago, in the same tournament, Kerala wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson hit the fastest List A double century by any Indian batsman. Earlier, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan have scored double centuries. What makes this feat even more remarkable is that Jaiswal just recently made his List A debut. On 28th September, when Mumbai played Chhattisgarh, he scored 44 runs after coming into bat at the No.3 position. In the next game against Goa, Jaiswal was promoted to the opening slot and scored his maiden List A century. He scored 113 runs off 123 balls in that match. While he scored 22 runs against Karnataka, he slammed another List A century (122 runs off 132 balls) against Kerala.

Jaiswal was famous long before this knock. He scored 186 for the Rizwi Springfield School in the MSSA Harris Shield semi-final against Don Bosco (Matunga) at the DPC ground, Matunga in 2015 and made sure his side had one foot in the final. He even made it to the Limca Book of Records that year, making him a fine prospect for Mumbai and perhaps IPL and international teams in the future.
