AC Milan fans throws fake money at Gianluigi Donnarumma

The AC Milan fans demonstrated their dissatisfaction with Gianluigi Donnarumma, the PSG goalkeeper, by making it rain (figuratively) with fake cash. Mail Sport earlier in the day revealed that some AC Milan supporters were ready to greet Donnarumma with disdain when he returned to the San Siro on Tuesday.

Before his controversial free move to Paris, the Italian goalkeeper—who had progressed through the Milan junior program and made over 250 appearances for the red and black team—was regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in world football.

In 2021, Donnarumma signed a more lucrative contract with Paris Saint-Germain, thereby abandoning his beloved boyhood club empty-handed. This was due to his decision not to sign a new contract with Milan, who paid £130,000 per week, with the purpose of letting his contract run out.

As a form of protest after Donnarumma's return to the stadium, Milan supporters showered him with fictitious dollar bills during the game. Their outrage and sadness over his leaving are expressed visually through this deed.

How did Donnarumma react?

Donnarumma was unaffected by the supporters' symbolic protest, but his PSG colleague Kylian Mbappe appeared to enjoy the joke. Mbappe was seen standing at the halfway line, giggling as fans pelted the goalkeeper with phony money.

The supporters' inventiveness extended beyond the forgery of money. Many of them were seen wearing No. 71 shirts, an upsetting choice that underscores Donnarumma's perceived betrayal by referring to the Neapolitan dream interpretation system known as "Smorfia Napoletana," where 71 represents a'man without morals.'

Before the game, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the chairman of Paris Saint-Germain, wanted to remind Milan fans of Donnarumma's years of faithful service to the club. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, he lauded Donnarumma's standing as a top goalkeeper in the world, as well as his professionalism and temperament. He praised Donnarumma's contributions to AC Milan over his 215 games for the club and professed his admiration for both the club and the goalkeeper.

Donnarumma's career began with Milan at a young age, when he became the youngest Italian to play for the U21 side at the age of 17 years and 28 days in March 2016. He went on to make 251 appearances for the Serie A giants, helping them win the Italian Super Cup in 2016-17. His decision not to renew his contract with Milan in 2021 sparked a transfer market frenzy, with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Juventus vying for his signature alongside PSG.

Following his move to the Parc des Princes, Donnarumma played a key role in Roberto Mancini's Italy winning the European Championships, defeating England in the final on penalties at Wembley. In Paris, the goalie quickly added to his list of achievements, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in 2022 and 2023.
