Another Rejection For Barcelona? Top Target Drops Major Hint He Won't Be Joining This Summer
With just days prior to the start of La Liga season, Barcelona have received a big blow as their top transfer target has hinted that he isn't signing in summer.
Barcelona are looking to drastically improve their squad heading into the new season after going trophy less in the last campaign. Under new manager Hansi Flick, Barcelona are looking to be more direct in their playing style and have already signed Spain's Euro 2024 star player in Dani Olmo for a whopping fee of 60 Million Euros from RB Leipzig.
While Dani Olmo was part of Barcelona's plan in the summer transfer window, the club have their eyes set elsewhere as their main target. But it seems like the Blaugarana have received another rejection in the summer as their top transfer target has dropped big hint that he doesn't intend to join the Catalan side this summer.
Barcelona receive another rejection
Barcelona president Joan Laporta back in June publicly admitted that signing Spanish winger Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao was their top priority this summer.
Nico Williams was on a tear for Spain as he combined with Barcelona's teen sensation Lamine Yamal and led them to the Euro 2024 crown.
Barcelona wanted to snap up the winger but as it turns out Nico Williams and Athletic Bilbao have dropped a big hint which suggests that the 22-year old won't be signing for the Catalan outfit this summer.
Athletic Bilbao have announced that Nico Williams will be donning the number 10 jersey for the 2023-24 La Liga season. Williams takes over the jersey number which was previously worn by club legend Iker Muniain.
“I am proud to get the shirt number 10 from Muniain and to make history as he did,” said Nico Williams on wearing the number 10 for Athletic Club.
This hint all but confirms that for this summer at least Nico Williams won't be joining Barcelona and continue to play for his Basque club.
Barcelona's tricky financial situation
The Nico Williams signing was always going to be tricky for Barcelona as Athletic Bilbao were not intent on letting their star player go for anything less than his release clause of 58 Million Euros.
Barcelona paid a hefty transfer fee to sign Dani Olmo but are now struggling to register their star acquisition. Hence, their delicate financial condition makes it unlikely that they can complete the Williams deal before 31st August.
