Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one game and fined £50,000 after a tweet sent to Benjamin Mendy was deemed to have been an 'aggravated breach' by the Football Association (FA). He must also attend a mandatory face-to-face education programme for his social media behaviour. The FA accepts it was not an intended offence by SIlva and his co-operation with the disciplinary proceedings meant he avoided a potential extended punishment.

Bernardo Silva banned after Benjamin Mendy tweet

On September 22, Bernardo Silva posted a message on Twitter that featured an image of Benjamin Mendy next to one of the mascots for the Spanish confectionery firm Conguitos. Although the message was just supposed to be banter with Mendy, the FA has not taken kindly to the post as it apparently referred to Benjamin Mendy's race. Silva deleted the tweet almost instantly and also apologised for his actions. But the FA has finally released a statement where they explained the incident in detail and his breach of FA Rule E3. Bernardo Silva has been suspended for one first-team competitive fixture, fined a reported £50,000 and must complete face-to-face education according to the commission's ruling.

Bernardo Silva will miss the champions’ hosting of Chelsea on 23 November. Manchester City will not appeal against the independent FA commission’s decision because of the possibility that Silva’s punishment could be extended. However, supporters felt the ruling was harsh on Silva as it was meant to be just a joke and Mendy himself was not offended by the tweet.
