Borussia Dortmund director Michael Zorc has dismissed speculation linking Jose Mourinho taking charge as the new manager of the club. The Portuguese tactician has been heavily linked with a switch to Germany in recent days, with German media reports even suggesting that he is busy learning the language in preparation for a job in the Bundesliga.

Mixed performance for Dortmund

Since being sacked by Manchester United in December 2018, the Portuguese coach has been working as a pundit but seeks a return to management. Zorc moved quickly to squash the rumours. With Dortmund sitting just one point off top spot in the Bundesliga table, it has been a decent start to the campaign for the club although their setback in the Champions League has piled the pressure on them in their bid to advance from Group F at the expense of either Barcelona or Inter.

Given Mourinho’s experience and track record both in domestic competitions and the Champions League, it’s perhaps easy to see why he would be linked with the job as he could turn their potential and quality into being a genuine contender to win major trophies. The 56-year-old has been out of management since leaving Manchester United last December, while he has kept himself busy with a string of punditry roles and other promotional work.

However, given his standing in the game and perhaps a desire to repair some of the damage done to his reputation in the latter part of his time at United, he’ll surely be itching to get back into coaching when the right opportunity presents itself.

Favre, who remains under contract at the Signal Iduna Park until 2021, won the DFL Super Cup to kick off the season well. But a shock defeat at Union Berlin and a string of draws have slowed their progress, and Dortmund currently sit fourth on 15 points. A 0-2 loss to Inter Milan has also seen the Serie A side leapfrog Favre's men into second place in Champions League Group F. Concerns over a lack of discipline also emerged after Jadon Sancho was fined for repeatedly turning up late.

Mourinho meanwhile has managed some of the biggest teams in England, Italy, Spain and Portugal but is yet to try his luck in either France or Germany. The 56-year-old revealed in the summer that he has been learning German and previously admitted that a job in the Bundesliga is not out the question. Mourinho is also an outside bet to take over from Tottenham chief Mauricio Pochettino after a disastrous run of recent results.
