Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte claimed on Thursday that Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund feared his team following their 2-0 Champions League victory on the previous day. Lautaro Martinez and Antonio Candreva both scored for Inter at the San Siro, where the Italian side registered their first Champions League win under Conte.

Martinez’s 22nd-minute striker gave Inter the advantage and the Nerazzurri were comfortably the better of the two sides after the opening goal. Dortmund were restricted to few chances, although England winger Jadon Sancho went close in first-half stoppage time. Martinez saw his 82nd-minute penalty saved before veteran wing-back Candreva’s first Champions League goal sealed Inter's victory in the closing moments.

Conte advises to maintain possession

According to Conte, they had prepared for a very different match but did well to adjust. When Dortmund switched back to 4-2-3-1 after the break, Inter adjusted again and took control. They had prepared to press Dortmund in certain areas of the pitch and they changed their system, so that was no longer valid. The most important thing Conte told the lads was not to lose possession in central areas as that is where they push forward on the counter.
