Chelsea vs Liverpool: Reds continue their winning run with a 2-1 win

The Blues lost 1-2 to the in-form Reds, who maintained their lead in the Premier League. Goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino helped Jurgen Klopp's men take a five-point lead over 2018-19 champions Manchester City even if they were made to sweat by Chelsea, who turned up the heat in the second half of the game.

Reds dominate

Sunday's game saw Chelsea throw everything they had at Liverpool pacesetters as minutes ticked away and the deservedly stole a goal to close the gap. However, it was Liverpool who had the last laugh. An early cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold which was deftly dealt with by Kepa Arrizabalaga set the tone for the match. Liverpool dominated the ball from the first minute and scored the opener in the 13th minute. Liverpool capitalised the free-kick awarded to them and Alexander-Arnold scored with a powerful shot high to Chelsea keeper's left.

Unlucky Blues

Up by a goal, Liverpool kept up their attack, even as Chelsea continued to find their way back into the game. Adding to Chelsea's misery, coach Frank Lampard's gamble to field Emerson Palmieri backfired as the left-back limped off, depleting their defence, which was further weakened when centre-back Andreas Christensen was replaced by Kurt Zouma. Soon after, Liverpool doubled their lead when Andy Robertson’s cross allowed Firmino to head past Chelsea keeper Arrizabalaga in the 29^th minute. Chelsea, however, won some approval from the home crowd in the second half as Kante pulled one back by bending a shot from 20 yards. He scored the first goal for the Blues in the 70^th minute. The fans roared their support for the home team, Chelsea fought to narrow the gap.

Speaking to a publication after the match, Chelsea boss Lampard said that performance-wise, Chelsea played better than Liverpool. He went on saying that the Blues had more energy in their game. Both Liverpool and Chelsea had suffered defeats in the Champions League earlier this week.
