Erling Haaland humbles Andre Onana after he tested him during the penalties of the Community Shield Final
During the Community Shield penalty shootout loss to Manchester City on Saturday, August 10, Manchester United custodian Andre Onana became fairly popular. Onana made one save but gave City seven penalties in the shootout at Wembley, therefore losing with a 7-6 result.
Onana, under close examination in his first season in 2023–24 stayed calm. Signed in David De Gea's place, the Cameroonian custodian had reassured supporters he would take big chances approaching the 2024–25 campaign.
As promised, Onana's aggressive style was evident during the Community Shield's tie following ninety-minute play, which resulted in a decisive penalty shootout. During the shootout, the former Inter Milan custodian took an unusual posture that seemed to invite opposition players to aim for an open area of the goal. As soon as Haaland converted the penalty, he smiled and went back as he did not fall for the Onana's trap.
Onana once seemed to point Erling Haaland in a certain direction, only for the Norwegian striker to gently lay his shot in the other corner. Onana stopped Bernardo Silva's effort, but he was unable to prevent Manchester City from winning.
United supporters have seen Onana's unusual penalty techniques before now. The 28-year-old used a similar approach earlier in the summer, during a pre-season friendly against Arsenal, but Gabriel Magalhaes effectively converted his penalty.
Onana's efforts were ultimately unable to guarantee the Community Shield for Manchester United since their opponents earned their first trophy of the 2024–25 season, exacting revenge for their loss in the FA Cup final 2023–24.
