Franz Beckenbauer was a graceful and visionary 'libero' who changed the face of soccer
Franz Beckenbauer moved ahead of himself by retreating a step. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the term "libero," which is derived from the Italian word for "free" and refers to a player who covered behind a defensive line, was not a completely novel idea in football.
