'Messi is Messi'- Argentine Legend Claims Lionel Messi Is More Selfish Than Cristiano Ronaldo

Argentine legend Mario Kempes once claimed that Lionel Messi was a much more selfish footballer in recent years as compared to Ronaldo.

The rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest in the history of football. The two football stars have gone against one another for over a decade now in trying to win it all. Lionel Messi over the years edged past Cristiano Ronaldo in the GOAT conversation after Lionel Messi won his 8th Ballon D'Or giving him three more than Cristiano Ronaldo who has 5. Messi also won the World Cup, a trophy which continues to avoid Cristiano Ronaldo. 

In the football world, Cristiano Ronaldo is generally known as the selfish footballer and Messi is known as the one who plays more for the team. Recently Argentine legend and World Cup winner Mario Kempes claimed that Lionel Messi is also selfish contrary to popular belief. 

Argentine Legend Mario Kempes Claims Messi Is Selfish 

According to Argentine legend Mario Kempes, over the past few years, Lionel Messi's game has become less centered around the team and more centered around himself. He had given this statement back in 2019 when Messi was still in Barcelona.

“Messi is Messi and Messi is Barcelona. What you do or do not do is key. When Messi is on the field, prepare yourself, because you do not know at what moment he is going to mess you up.

“But Messi should not surprise us. We have seen him do everything, although I think he has slowed down a bit and now I see him wanting to do more things on his own.”

“Before I saw him as a team player, now I see him more selfish in his actions. It is the opposite of Cristiano, who now plays more for the team than for the ‘me’," stated the 1978 World Cup winner. 

‘I would say that with Messi’- Kempes Reveals He Wants To Play With Messi 

“I will tell you another thing, we Argentines criticise Messi because we are specialists in criticising what is ours. If you ask me who I would have liked to play with, I would say that with Messi ... because I already played with [Diego] Maradona,” stated Mario Kempes emphasizing that he wants to play with Lionel Messi as he has already played with and won the World Cup with Diego Maradona.
