Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Leonardo Bonucci calls Italy 'a work in progress'
Leonardo Bonucci has admired the progress Italy has made under Roberto Mancini but believes that they are still not at the same level as other European elites
Italy's fine form in the Euro 2020 Qualifiers has not convinced defender Leonardo Bonucci yet. Apparently, the Juventus defender believes his side aren't one of the top teams in Europe but have the ability to reach that level.
Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Italy's rampant run in Group J
Italy won a record 10th straight match with a 3-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Euro 2020 qualifying on Friday. They will host Armenia in their final group stage match on Monday. The Italians are also undefeated across their past 13 matches. Their last loss was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Portugal in September 2018. The Azzurri have progressed really well under Roberto Mancini after dramatically missing out on a World Cup berth in 2018.
Euro 2020 Qualifiers: Leonardo Bonucci expects more from the Italians
Despite their run, Leonardo Bonucci stressed that Italy still has a lot of progress to make in order to catch up with the likes of Spain, Germany, France and England. Bonucci believes Italy are not yet at the same level as the European elites but feels that they can reach that standard. According to Bonucci, the best way the Italians can track their progress is by competing against those said teams. Bonucci thinks his young side does not have many world-class players unlike the other teams, but they all have the qualities and the potential to reach that level.
Serie A's legendary manager Arrigo Sacchi recently hailed Italy's performances under head coach Roberto Mancini. Mancini took over after the nation failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. He admired Italy's recent form and wanted them to develop a winning mentality.
Across their last three matches, Mancini's side have scored 10 goals without conceding and will be confident of extending that record against Armenia. Italy claimed a 3-1 win the last time these two teams met. The group stage is done and dusted for Italy and the real test for Mancini's men awaits when they will try to win only their second Euro in their history.
