Fans criticize Inter Miami and Lionel Messi’s lacklustre performance vs New York City FC

Fans on X criticised Lionel Messi after Inter Miami's underwhelming performance against New York City at Yankee Stadium on September 21.

New York opened well, Santiago Rodriguez hitting the post only nine minutes in. After halftime, they produced numerous strong prospects but failed to seize them. Inter Miami led against the game's flow in the 75th minute with a goal by Leonardo Campana. But James Sands marked his maiden MLS goal by equalising for New York in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Messi came back to the starting lineup and ran the whole match, yet FotMob rated his performance just 5.8. He missed nine duels, failed to complete any crosses, managed only one shot that missed the target, and neglected to generate any opportunities.

Inter Miami will now face Charlotte FC in the MLS on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
