Diego Maradona's neurologist Leopoldo Luque spoke with the press after authorities searched his home and office on Sunday as part of investigations into the death of the 60-year-old soccer star, which caused a wave of grief across Argentina. Luque said he believed all of Maradona's medical and legal team had tried to do right by him.
"All of us, including him (Maradona's lawyer Matías Morla), I think, tried to see Diego well. I didn't see the 'good and bad guys.' The one who was most difficult of all was Diego. You couldn't give him any directives, any," Luque told reporters.
The doctor said he had given investigators all of the records of his treatment of Maradona, as well as computers, hard drives and cellphones.Weeping at times, he insisted he defended his treatment of the troubled soccer star, who died Wednesday of a heart attack following a November 3 brain operation.
Luque said he was not Maradona's chief physician, but part of a medical team. Maradona had suffered a series of medical problems, some due to excesses of drugs and alcohol. He was reportedly near death in 2000 and 2004. "I am responsible for something regarding Diego. Do you know what I am responsible for? To love him, to take care of him, to extend his life and improve it to the end," Luque said.
