Spain's supporters rejoiced as though they had taken home the European Championship. With his fists on his hips and a dejected expression on his face, coach Julian Nagelsmann watched as the players from Germany marched up to their fans in a sullen manner. The quarterfinal matchup between the sides that have played the finest football at Euro 2024 — the only three-time champions of the competition — did not let down. The game began at a breakneck speed with crunching tackles and end-to-end activity, but Espanol had to wait until the very end to get going after they had stolen a late goal.

Dani Carvajal, a defender for Spain, was sent off for a second yellow card late in extra time and will miss Tuesday's semifinal matchup with Portugal or France due to suspension. After receiving a booking, fellow defender Robin Le Normand will also be out from the game. German player Toni Kroos' career was ended by the outcome.

Toni Kroos, who represented Germany in their last game following their elimination, was fortunate to avoid a booking for an ill-advised challenge from Pedri. Moments later, the Spain midfielder was hurt and in tears as he departed the pitch following another hard challenge. In the eighth minute, Olmo — the fastest substitution in Euros history — took his position.

Lamine Yamal nearly made history at the tournament by scoring a goal from the ensuing free kick, but his shot sailed past the right post. In the opening goal, Olmo scored the goal with his first attempt after Yamal cut in from the right and rolled the ball across.
