New Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann says he's been left "rubbing his eyes" in recent days over the huge transfer fees and wages being paid in the English Premier League and Ligue 1.

Bayern have paid for just one signing ahead of the new season, which starts for them at Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday, with Nagelsmann's former defender at RB Leipzig Dayot Upamecano joining for a fee of 42.5m Euros (50m USD).

Meanwhile, defending English champions Manchester City have spent £100m (138m USD) on Jack Grealish and Champions League winners Chelsea are on the verge of bringing striker Romelu Lukaku back to the west London club for a reported fee of £97.5m (135m USD)

Over in France's Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain have signed Lionel Messi from Barcelona on a reported annual wage of 35m Euros after tax (41m USD).

Nagelsmann thinks that German clubs are at a disadvantage in the transfer market due to German tax regulations and the league's 50+1 ownership model which prevents rich backers taking full control of any club.
