On Saturday, the Netherlands overcame a deficit to defeat Turkey 2-1 and secure a spot in the semifinals of the European Championship. In the final quarterfinal, the Dutch prevailed thanks to an own goal by Mert Muldur in the 76th minute, just six minutes after Stefan De Vrij had cancelled Samet Akaydin's header for Turkey in the first half.

Although the Dutch had a stronger start, Cody Gapko, Xavi Simons, and Memphis Depay were largely limited by Turkey's defence. As it did in the victory over Austria, Turkey started with five players at the back without the ball and got better over time.

After some Turkish pressure, Akaydin scored in the 35th. The defender headed in a butter-soft cross from Arda Guler that struck the underside of the crossbar. Fans and Turkey's coaching staff went crazy with the celebration. Fans on the west end of the stadium lit flares, and Guler was showered with hugs in the coaching area. Most people stood once the goal was scored.

In a city where there is a sizable Turkish-American community, the number of Turkish supporters substantially outnumbers that of their orange-clad counterparts. Relatives of Turkish "guest workers" who came to what was then West Germany to aid in the reconstruction of the post-war economy make up the majority. About 3 million Turks or those with Turkish ancestry live in Germany, making them the largest ethnic minority in the nation. The team has received fervent support for Euro 2024.

To a chorus of whistles, the Dutch pressed for an equaliser prior to halftime. After the half, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman—who represented his country in the 1988 Euro Championship—reacted by substituting large striker Wout Weghorst for Steven Bergwijn. The Dutch wingers had a target thanks to Weghorst's presence, which increased pressure.

The Dutch wingers had a target thanks to Weghorst's presence, which sparked a period of strong pressure. Guler's free-kick struck the post as the Dutch assault persisted. When De Vrij was given the freedom to head in Depay's cross in the 70th, it eventually paid off.

On Wednesday in Dortmund, the Netherlands will play England in the second semifinal. In the first match on Tuesday, Spain takes against France.
