Paraguayan judge Clara Ruiz Díaz ruled that soccer star Ronaldinho and his brother will remain in preventive imprisonment in jail while under investigation, after entering the country with falsified documents.

The Brazilian player was arrested on Friday night in a hotel in Paraguay's capital for entering the country with falsified documents.

Ronaldinho's lawyers asked for house arrest, but the judge said they did not provide any documentation to prove the brothers won't flee Paraguay before the investigation is finished.

"They did not bring a single document that suggests that the court can avoid the danger of escape," said Ruiz Díaz.

The Brazilians said they had come to Asunción for business reasons.

The brothers said the documents were offered as a gift by a Brazilian businessman, Wilmondes Sousa Liria, who has already been jailed.

Ronaldinho, a two-time world player of the year, last played professionally in 2015 after an illustrious career which included a 2002 World Cup win and spells at European giants Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan.
