Serge Gnabry becomes fastest to reach 10 goals for Germany

There is no doubting that Miroslav Klose is a German legend. Miroslav Klose, the German striker, scored over 270 goals for club and country during his playing career, with the striker signing off with an appearance in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina. Miroslav Klose made way for Mario Götze in the 88th minute, as Götze went on to score the memorable winner in the 113th minute. The victory proved a perfect swansong for Klose, having headed the striking department for Germany from 2001-2014.

Serge Gnabry: Heir to Miroslav Klose's throne?

Following his retirement, many players were labelled as the next Klose; RB Leipzig frontman Timo Werner being the latest to be associated with the tag. The Germans, however, have seen the unlikely figure of former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry break Klose’s record most recently. Serge Gnabry’s fine run of form in recent games saw the winger score the first goal for the Germans in their friendly against Argentina at the Signal Iduna Park. His goal against the South Americans means that Serge Gnabry is the fastest player to score double figures for the German national team. Gnabry has been in the spotlight in recent weeks, thanks to an eye-catching display against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League. Gnabry went on to score four goals in the match, condemning Tottenham to their heaviest defeat in recent history.

Gnabry was the subject of heavy criticism from Tony Pulis while the winger was on loan at West Bromwich Albion back in 2015-16, with the manager saying that Gnabry just wasn’t at the level to feature in games for Pulis’ side. After an eventful loan spell at Werder Bremen, the 24-year old has gone on to become a regular feature in Joachim Löw’s side ever since breaking into the Bayern Munich starting 11. Timo Werner, meanwhile, has been shunted on to the wings, with Leroy Sane occupying wing when fit and firing. Leipzig’s number nine, Werner, was largely expected to take on the goalscoring responsibility for Die Mannschaft. The striker, however, has flattered to deceive in recent fixtures for both, club and country. Gnabry, meanwhile, has welcomed the responsibility with open arms. The winger has one goal and two assists in six games so far in the Bundesliga and looks primed to set the Bundesliga on fire this season. He has certainly set the Champions League alight, hasn’t he? Mauricio Pochettino would agree.
