Portugal coach Roberto Martinez on whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start in Portugal vs Georgia?

Roberto Martinez, the head coach of Portugal, has declared that Cristiano Ronaldo, the team's captain, will start against Georgia in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday, June 26. With one game remaining, the Selecao have already taken first place in their group.

Following wins over Turkey (3-0) and the Czech Republic (2-1), Ronaldo and his colleagues have advanced to the knockout rounds. Even if the 39-year-old hasn't scored at the Euros this year, he showed his selflessness by helping Bruno Fernandes in the Turkey game when he had a great chance to do so himself.

Being the first player to compete in six separate Euro 2024 editions, Ronaldo has created history. With little bearing on the group rankings, he now wants to be the first to score in all six editions and may do so in the next game against Georgia.

Martinez declared he will rest a few important players after securing qualifying. But as the Metro reports, the Spanish coach has confirmed that Ronaldo will start in the Georgia game. He said:

"Cristiano will be a starter tomorrow. He is an important player. He had a very consistent season and played every match, playing a lot of minutes.

"To continue the competitive pace, it is not a good idea to stop him playing now and then reactivate him in another six days. ‘The opponent in the round of 16 is not important now. Our focus is on the Georgia match. We want to win and give our best."

On July 1, Portugal will play for a place in the quarterfinals against the third-placed team from Group A, B, or C.
