Wout Weghorst to the RESCUE again as Netherlands seal dramatic late win over Poland in Euro 2024
Wout Weghorst is the hero once again for Netherlands as he scored an 83rd minute winner to hand his nation all three points in their Euro 2024 opener vs Poland.
Netherlands have kickstarted their Euro 2024 campaign with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Poland and pick up all three points, thanks to their towering centre forward Wout Weghorst.
Wout Weghorst the hero for Netherlands in their FIFA world cup 2022 quarterfinal against Argentina, came on once again for the Dutch side and scored a late winner in the 83rd minute to hand Ronald Koeman's side all three points.
The match started in surprising fashion as Poland who were missing their veteran captain and star forward in Robert Lewandowski through injury went ahead courtesy of a towering header by Adam Buksa in the 13th minute.
The Dutch responded very well but were unable to convert their chances. However in the 29th minute, star dutch and Liverpool attacker fired a shot from outside the box which was deflected and found its way into the back of the net to hand Netherlands the equaliser.
Wout Weghorst scores late winner for Netherlands vs Poland
The second half saw, Poland dominate and have the better chances initially which were thwarted by Dutch keeper Verbruggen. Ronald Koeman decided to sub on Wout Weghorst for Memphis Depay late in second half.
That substitution worked wonders as Nathan Ake threaded a delicious ball to Weghorst inside the box and the striker made no mistake as he scored the dramatic winner for Netherlands.
Poland even after the Dutch went ahead, had their chances to make it 2-2 but failed to beat the dutch keeper.
The goal by Wout Weghorst could prove to be massive for Netherlands as they are in a tough group which includes France and Austria as well. Slipping up against Poland would have been detrimental to their chances for qualification but Weghorst has certainly given his side a perfect start into the tournament.
As for Poland they will be frustrated by letting the game slip and failing to convert their chances especially without their star player in Robert Lewandowski. Up next for Poland will be a match against Austria, while Netherlands will now prepare to face tournament favourites France on 21st June.
