The 2024 Formula One season has several twists and turns as the season has progressed and entered into the final stages with only nine races to go and the Championship races heating up. The season has already seen several different race winners so far, something which was uncommon in the last two seasons. McLaren have emerged as a force to be reckoned with and are taking the fight straight to Red Bull as they slowly chip at their lead in the Drivers Championship and the Constructors Championship.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has sent a warning to Red Bull that McLaren are annihilating the whole grid with their serious pace.
Toto Wolff Sends Warning
Toto Wolff spoke on McLaren's dominant performance after the Dutch Grand Prix which saw Lando Norris win the race by a margin of 22.9 seconds as defending champion Max Verstappen came in second.
“McLaren has proven in the past, since Austria last year that they brought upgrades to the car that landed spot on. And that was just very impressive to see today. He’s basically annihilated all of the competition, with the fastest lap at the end on a 42-lap old Hard. Twenty seconds in gap. I think this championship, the Constructors’ Championship, is wide open in my opinion and it’s good for Formula 1,” said Wolff.
There is a very high probability that Red Bull might lose out on the Constructors Championship as the gap between Red Bull and McLaren is now just 30-points and McLaren have been dominating the sport. Another factor is Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has been having a disappointing season which has led to Max Verstappen to doing everything alone.
Mercedes Could Aid Lando Norris's Title Hopes
As of right now in the Drivers Championship, Max Verstappen has a 70-point gap between himself and second placed Lando Norris. Considering there are only 9 races left in the season, Lando Norris would need a lot of great performances and a lot of luck to somehow win the Championship at this stage.
Toto Wolff believes that Mercedes if they get back to their normal pace could aid Lando in his quest for a World Championship as they could separate the Red Bull and McLaren cars.
“The Drivers’ Championship, I think Max to a certain degree has it under control still, but it will be exciting to see whether there is a change of powers. And how much can we participate in that, because we were able in the last few races, and I think if we would have had a car that was about normal, where we would have ended up, I don’t think we would have beaten Norris, but we would have been in a little bit more exciting position,” said Wolff.
The competition between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen will now continue at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
